When a simple chart is not enough

An additional relative or later death can change every step. Put events in chronological order and seek a qualified review.

Exclusion

Not every person in the family tree receives a share. In a published Dar al-Ifta case, the father excluded the deceased woman’s siblings, while the number of siblings still affected the mother’s fraction.

Awl

Sometimes prescribed fractions exceed the original whole. A Dar al-Ifta example begins with six shares and adjusts to eight; it shows why simply adding chart fractions is insufficient.

Successive deaths

If an heir dies before an earlier estate is distributed, each death has its own heirs, debts and date. Calculate the first estate before treating that heir’s entitlement as part of the later estate.

Prepare for review

Record each death date, relationships, who was alive, the net amount of each estate, debts, bequests and supporting records.
